Benin City is set for a thrilling football event as the Akpakomiza and Friends Novelty and Victory Match kicks off on Sunday, November 10, at the iconic Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
Organised as part of the celebration leading up to the inauguration of Edo State’s incoming governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, the match promises to be a fusion of sports, entertainment, and political prominence.
At a press briefing on Wednesday, Frank Ilaboya, spokesperson for the organisers, highlighted the extensive preparations:
“We have our customised jerseys, courtesy of Uhuru Sports and Spire Media, and 20 autographed balls ready to be given to supporters, signed by the incoming governor himself,” Ilaboya said.
“More than eight ex-internationals, led by Super Eagles’ manager Coach Austin Egwavon, will grace the field, bringing a touch of nostalgia and excitement to fans.”
Akogate Premium Water has been named the official water sponsor of the match, while Home & Away Restaurant will handle the entertainment, promising top-notch refreshments for players and attendees.
Local favourites like Mama Ebo Pepper Rice and Eddy Tom Motors, along with construction giants A&K Construction, have also joined hands to support the event.
The guest list boasts a blend of sports and politics, with notable figures such as former Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, alongside other political chieftains and public figures expected to attend. The match is seen as a fitting prelude to the formal celebrations surrounding the new administration.
“This is a match everyone will enjoy,” Ilaboya added. “It’s not only a celebration but also a symbol of unity and the governor-elect’s commitment to using sports as a tool for youth empowerment.”
The novelty match on November 10 will be the first in a series of events marking the transition of leadership in Edo State, with additional inauguration events, including a Jumat service, praise and worship session, and the official swearing-in ceremony, scheduled in the following days.
The entire State is buzzing with excitement, as this match is set to bring together sports enthusiasts, political leaders, and citizens in a spirit of unity and celebration.
