Former Edo governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata, has defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), aligning himself with the political direction of Peter Obi in a move that could reshape alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.

Akpata said his decision was influenced by Obi’s recent political realignment, signalling a possible convergence of like-minded actors seeking an alternative platform in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

However, what began as a celebratory gathering quickly descended into chaos as suspected gunmen reportedly stormed the campaign venue shortly after the announcement.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers later trailed a convoy to the residence of John Odigie-Oyegun, where Obi was present at the time, escalating fears of a targeted disruption.
