… Commissioner Warns Against Dumping Refuse in Drainages
Residents of Amufi Community in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State have expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of ongoing road construction in the area, noting that the development will enhance economic activities in the Community.
The commendation came during an inspection of ongoing road projects by the Commissioner for Works, Engr. Felix Akhabue. He expressed satisfaction with the progress of work across project sites, despite recent rainfall, saying, “I’m impressed with the contractors’ commitment. There was rainfall two days ago, yet they are all back on site. Fortunately, the rainfall has not been continuous, allowing work to proceed steadily.”
Engr. Akhabue, who disclosed that he had visited eight project sites, emphasised the importance of road infrastructure in driving economic growth. “The only way the economy can boom is through the provision of road infrastructure. That is why the Governor allocates a significant portion of capital expenditure to the Ministry of Works to ensure roads are delivered for our people,” he said.
The Commissioner assured residents that funds allocated to the Ministry are being judiciously utilised for optimal public benefit, while acknowledging that available resources may not cover all roads at once. In his words, “No government has unlimited resources, but what matters is making optimal use of what is available.”
On civic responsibility on the part of residents, the Commissioner appealed that they should pay correct taxes, stressing that internally generated revenue remains critical to sustaining developmental projects. He further urged communities to take ownership of the projects and to desist from dumping refuse into drainage channels to prevent blockages and flooding.
Speaking on behalf of the Community, the Secretary of the Landlords’ Association, Mr. Godwin Eseka, described the construction which included dual drainage system, as unprecedented in the history of the area.
Mr. Eseka stated, “This kind of massive road construction with drainages on both sides has never happened in this Community before. The work is very solid and can stand the test of time.” He added that the projects have further endeared the Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo to the people of the area.
Another resident, Mrs. Modupe Ilegbojie, said she had previously spent personal funds maintaining and sand-filling the roads, adding that the Government’s intervention has relieved her of further financial burden. In her words, “With this intervention, I will no longer spend my money buying sand to fill the roads.”
