The Edo council of the Nigerian Union of Journalist in a statement on Monday directs all her members to join the proposed nationwide protest by the Nigerian Labour Congress in solidarity with the Academic Staff Union of University, billed to hold on Tuesday 26 and Wednesday 27, July 2022.
The statement signed by the Secretary to the Council, Andy Egbon reads:
“In line with the directive of the National Executive Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council has directed its members across the state to come out en-masse to participate in a peaceful mass protest scheduled for Tuesday July 26 and Wednesday July 27, 2022 in solidarity with the four University based sister unions.
“The associations are the Accademic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the National Association of Accademic Technologists (NAAT).
“The protest is in solidarity with the unions over the Federal Government’s continued closure of the Nigeria Universities following the strike embarked on by the unions over Federal Government’s nonchalant attitude in addressing the demands by the University based unions.
“This notice is also to request members of NUJ to cover the protest and give it a wide publicity.
“The take-off point of the protest is the state NLC secretariat, No 17 James Watt Road, Benin City where it will join others at the Museum ground for movement to the NUJ Press Centre in Benin city before proceeding further.”
