The Edo State Police Command has issued a stern warning that anyone who deliberately attacks or attempts to harm police officers on lawful duty will face the full weight of the law, declaring that tolerance for such acts has been exhausted.
The warning follows an incident along Iyekogba Estate Gate in Benin City, where a reckless driver allegedly drove against traffic, rammed through a police checkpoint barricade and turned back to charge at officers on duty, knocking down three personnel in the process.
According to the Command, the suspect only came to a halt after crashing into several vehicles. He was subsequently restrained and arrested by officers at the scene. The injured policemen are currently receiving medical treatment.
Preliminary investigations identified the suspect as Nsikak Okon, a 19-year-old unlicensed driver. A black Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV, estimated to be worth ₦28 million and allegedly belonging to him, was recovered. Police said the vehicle, which has reportedly been in use since May 2024, was unregistered.
Items recovered from the suspect include a substance suspected to be Canadian Loud and a Sprite bottle containing a sky-blue liquid believed to be diluted refnol.
The Command recalled that on 24 December 2025 it had appealed to motorists to slow down at checkpoints and cooperate with officers conducting lawful duties in the interest of public safety. It reiterated that directive, stressing that there is “absolutely no justifiable reason” for any motorist to speed through a police checkpoint other than an attempt to evade lawful checks or endanger lives.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, warned that any deliberate attack on officers would not be condoned.
“Enough is enough,” the police chief said, emphasising that offenders would not be spared.
The Edo State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state.
