The management of Auchi Polytechnic has debunked reports alleging that two students died and several others sustained gunshot injuries during the institution’s recent Students’ Union Government (SUG) election.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday at the Polytechnic’s boardroom, Dr Angela Egele, Director of the Public Relations Division, described the claims—circulated by former presidential candidate Mr Peter Obi via his official X (formerly Twitter) account—as “false, misleading, and completely unfounded.”
Dr Egele expressed disappointment that such serious allegations were made publicly without any attempt to verify the facts.
“The management of Auchi Polytechnic categorically states that these claims are false and misleading,” she said. “It is disheartening that a prominent public figure like Mr Peter Obi and a reputable media outlet such as Arise TV would publish unverified information capable of inciting panic.”
She explained that although the SUG elections were declared inconclusive due to irregularities, no students were shot or killed throughout the process. “For the avoidance of doubt, no student died, and no one was shot,” she emphasised.
Dr Egele also dismissed videos circulating on social media as “mostly doctored,” asserting that several security agencies were present on campus to ensure the elections were conducted in a safe and secure environment. These included the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Department of State Services (DSS), the Mobile Police (MOPOL), and the local vigilante group.
She urged members of the public, stakeholders, and the media to disregard the false reports and rely only on credible information.
“Auchi Polytechnic remains committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all students and staff,” she concluded.
