In a decisive effort to stamp out cult-related activities, Auchi Polytechnic has expelled no fewer than 58 students for their alleged involvement in secret cult groups over the past two years.
The institution’s Rector, Dr Salisu Shehu Umar, made the announcement on Tuesday, emphasising the polytechnic’s unwavering stance against cultism. He stated that the expulsions were part of a broader strategy to restore discipline and ensure a safe learning environment for all students.
Dr Umar, who assumed office in 2022, revealed that upon his appointment, he urged students involved in cultism to renounce their affiliations in exchange for clemency. “I made it clear from the beginning that any student caught would face the consequences,” he said. “As a result, many came forward to renounce their membership.”
He further noted that both staff and management had taken proactive steps, including swearing affidavits declaring they had no ties to any cult groups. “Our commitment is total. This institution must remain a place of learning, not lawlessness,” he added.
The rector admitted that cultism remains a persistent issue in the region but vowed continued vigilance. “We have expelled over 58 students since 2022, and we will not hesitate to expel more if necessary. Cultism is a scourge that must be tackled head-on.”
Auchi Polytechnic’s firm response to the menace has been welcomed by stakeholders who have long called for stronger action against the threat of cultism in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
