The AutoVision Initiative, in partnership with the Sen. Monday Okpebholo Foundation (SMOF), has unveiled plans to provide free Smart AI Driving Glasses and eye screenings for car buyers in Edo State, a move to enhance road safety.
The initiative, aimed at tackling vision-related road accidents, will see 100,000 road users benefit from free eye screenings over the next five years. Additionally, car buyers in Edo will receive cutting-edge AI-powered driving glasses at no extra cost, thanks to the partnership between AutoVision and SMOF.
Speaking to journalists in Benin City, Desmond Bassey, Lead Consultant for the AutoVision Initiative, stressed the urgent need for improved vision care among drivers. He noted that poor eyesight is a major contributor to road accidents and emphasised that the introduction of AI-powered eyewear would significantly enhance driver visibility and comfort.
“The Smart AI Driving Glasses feature advanced blue lens technology designed to reduce glare and improve vision, particularly for night driving. They also offer smart capabilities, including hands-free calling, language translation, and real-time access to eye care professionals,” Bassey explained.
He further clarified that the initiative is structured to ensure accessibility. While the glasses are freely available to car buyers, individuals without glaucoma are encouraged to support the programme by making a donation towards assisting glaucoma patients before applying.
The initiative will be executed in collaboration with car dealers, eye clinics, and NGOs, ensuring that both new and existing drivers receive the necessary vision support. Interested participants can apply at the point of vehicle purchase through designated vendors affiliated with the programme.
Beyond providing eyewear, the AutoVision Initiative is working towards building a nationwide network of partners dedicated to reducing vision-related accidents and improving road safety in Nigeria. Car dealers, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders are invited to join the movement to make driving safer for all.
