Baseless Attacks on Edo South Senator: Facts Speak Louder Than Mr. Figo’s Grudge

A recent article by one Ikhuenbor Felix Igbinevbo, popularly known as Mr. Figo, titled *“2027: PERFORMANCE, NOT SENTIMENT, MUST DECIDE EDO SOUTH’S FUTURE IF THE PRESIDENT MUST WIN EDO STATE”*, has come under fire for its reckless and baseless attack on the incumbent Senator representing Edo South.

In the piece, Mr. Figo branded the Senator an “underperformer” — a claim that reeks more of personal vendetta than genuine concern for the people of Edo South. Reliable sources reveal that Mr. Figo’s tirade stems from the Senator’s refusal to accede to his outrageous financial demands running into millions of naira for personal “projects”.

What Mr. Figo conveniently ignored, however, are the Senator’s track record of service, people-driven initiatives and visible projects that have touched lives across the senatorial district.

From sponsoring landmark bills — including one to establish a Federal College of Education in Abudu and an amendment to the Federal Medical Centres Act, to tackling pressing petitions from Nigerians, the Senator has demonstrated true legislative commitment. In education, his scholarship schemes have benefitted over 420 higher education students, countless secondary school students and JAMB applicants, easing the financial burdens of struggling families.

On youth and women empowerment, the Senator has launched skill acquisition and training programmes, backed with the provision of work tools to ensure sustainable livelihoods. Infrastructure development under his watch includes ongoing road projects and solar street lights for safer communities. Healthcare has also been a priority, with medical outreaches, training for traditional birth attendants and free distribution of essential supplies.

In his push for food security, he distributes thousands of bags of rice annually to widows, vulnerable households and internally displaced persons. He has also backed cultural promotions that highlight the heritage of the Benin Kingdom, while advancing girl-child education.

Even as an opposition lawmaker under the Labour Party, these achievements were delivered. Now, with his recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Senator is positioned to attract even greater development to Edo South, bolstering President Bola Tinubu’s chances of victory in 2027.

Claims that the Senator is “inaccessible” are also laughable. His Amagba residence remains open to all constituents, young and old, male and female, able and challenged. Only recently, the Oghede community publicly thanked him for resolving a tense land dispute with the Nigerian Army, working hand-in-hand with Brigadier General Ebenezer Olufemi Oduyebo to secure peace.

Edo South has a Senator who listens, acts and delivers. Mr. Figo’s so-called critique is nothing more than a bitter outburst fuelled by self-interest. If he truly loves Edo South, he should put aside personal grudges and join hands with the Senator to move the district forward.
