The long-awaited first rainfall of the year graced Benin City on Monday, 27th January 2025, bringing a refreshing change to the hot and dry weather conditions that had gripped the city. The rain, which began just after 2:00 PM and lasted for few minutes was greeted with a wave of relief by residents, many of whom had been eagerly awaiting the downpour.
While the rain was heavy in areas such as the Government Reservation Area (GRA) and its surrounding districts, other parts of the city experienced lighter showers. The accompanying cool breeze further amplified the pleasant atmosphere, making it a welcome respite from the sweltering heat that had caused sleepless nights for many.
Amadasun Grace, a resident of the city, expressed her joy in an interview with Uptown Press NG. “It was a total relief. I am super excited for the rain,” she said. “Rain means we can have a resounding sleep at night. The hot weather before the rainfall made it difficult for my family and I to sleep, but now we can finally rest.”
For Thomas Ogedengbe, another local, the arrival of the rain signalled the start of the planting season. He noted that both he and his family had been hoping and praying for the rain to arrive, as it marks the beginning of a new agricultural cycle. “The rain is a sign that it’s time to prepare for the planting season. We’re all ready for it,” he shared.
Farmers across Benin City and the wider Edo State are particularly excited, as the rainfall signifies the ideal time to begin sowing crops for the year. The timing of this first rainfall is seen as a positive omen for a fruitful planting season ahead.
With the wet season now officially underway, Benin City residents are hopeful for more rains in the coming weeks to support their agricultural activities and bring continued relief from the oppressive heat.
