The Edo State Football Association has urged strict discipline and unity of purpose as preparations intensify for the much-anticipated Benin Unity Cup, with jerseys and mobilisation funds formally presented to FA Chairmen across Edo South on Saturday in Benin City.
At the presentation ceremony held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Media Centre, Edo FA Chairman, Fred Newton Erhunmwunse, handed jerseys and logistics funds to representatives of the seven local government areas participating in the grassroots tournament. He described the competition as a vehicle for inclusivity, youth empowerment, and the discovery of new football talent, but warned that indiscipline would not be tolerated.
“This tournament is not just about winning; it is about inclusiveness,” Erhunmwunse said. “Every player has a chance to rise. Someone you field today could become a future star for your club. But none of that can happen without fairness and discipline. I cannot stand here in Benin and watch FA Chairmen fail to control their players.”
He expressed confidence in the Organising Committee’s ability to deliver a world-class event and challenged coaches and team officials to uphold the spirit of the game throughout the competition.
Responding, the FA Chairmen pledged full cooperation to ensure a smooth and competitive tournament. They highlighted the wider economic and social value of the Unity Cup, stressing that beyond participation, the event could open international doors for exceptional young players.
“For the duration of this competition, football becomes the main focus for these children,” they said. “Some will be scouted by major international clubs, contributing positively to our economy. We have gone through every ward to select players, and screening continues until Monday. This is a project that deserves support from local governments and all well-meaning agencies.”
The Benin Unity Cup, proudly sponsored by Senator Neda Imasuen, Senator representing Edo South, aims to empower young people across the district and provide a platform for nurturing the next generation of Nigerian football stars. It is billed to begin on November 20th through December 20th.
The tournament is expected to kick off amidst high enthusiasm, with organisers promising tight security, fair officiating and a festival-like atmosphere to celebrate grassroots football at its best.
