Egor Local Government delivered a ruthless attacking display to hammer Uhunmwode LG 5–1 in a pulsating encounter at the inaugural Benin Unity Cup Football Tournament on Friday.
Despite conceding the fastest goal of the tournament, Egor responded decisively, turning the match on its head with a devastating spell of goals that left Uhunmwode shell-shocked.
Hope Oleije stunned the crowd by firing Uhunmwode into the lead inside the opening minute, capitalising on a defensive lapse straight from kick-off. However, the early setback only ignited Egor’s dominance.
Ojelum Ernest drew Egor level in the 8th minute before launching his side into the lead shortly after, setting the tone for what turned into a one-sided affair. Osemwengie Patrick extended the advantage in the 17th minute, while Courage Ehigie added a fourth just before the break in the 39th minute.
Ernest completed his brace in the 67th minute to crown an imperious performance, before Nwaigwe Chuka sealed the rout with a composed finish in the 50th minute, underlining Egor’s superiority.
In another keenly contested fixture, Orhiomwon LG and Oredo 2 played out a hard-fought 1–1 draw, with both sides displaying grit, pace and attacking intent in an entertaining battle.
Meanwhile, Oredo I were awarded a walkover victory against Ovia South-West LG after their opponents failed to report for duty. Match officials, in line with tournament regulations, handed Oredo I the maximum three points and three goals following the expiration of the mandatory 30-minute grace period.
The Benin Unity Cup continues to build momentum, promising more drama as the tournament progresses.
