BIRS to explore improved innovation technologies for revenue generation

Organisations that seeks improvements in its operations for maximum efficiency and effectiveness, the utilisation of Modern and improved innovative technologies is highly inevitable.

Benue State Internal Revenue Service, BIRS, in her bid to achieving its mandate of generating optimum revenue for the State has adopted technological innovations to this regard.

The Ag.Chairman of the Service, Mr. Emmanuel Agema ACTI, reiterated recently in an interview with daybreak newspaper his resolve to priotize massive revenue generation for the state by blocking all leakages using some of these innovations.

The chairman stated that the deployment of improved technology during his administration is imperative to increase revenue generation and address issues of physical handling of cash at payment points and also addressing the issues of fake receipts.

last Month, Softnet company limited, an IT consulting firm, introduced Benue State Tax aggregate Engine and revenue collection service, A new portal with mobile payments options solutions that enables tax payers to make payments from the comfort of their homes and offices on the go.

The Portal automates tax administration, processes, tax assessments, filling and payments. This Service will enable tax payers to file their monthly and annual tax returns and pay taxes online.

In Subsequent time with the authorization of the Ag. Chairman, the service will enable tax payers generate electronic Tax Clearance Certificate. (E-TCC). This is a certificate required by government agencies to facilitate contracts or Grant access to some benefits on any transaction in the state.

This innovations seeks to effectively reduce tax evasion, improve transparency in tax administration as Mobile payments, e-Tcc and filing of tax returns, will reduce the need for physical visits to BIRS offices thereby saving cost and time, reducing leakages, increasing compliance, and enhancing operations and efficiency of BIRS in revenue collection.

Interestingly, Android point of sale machines have been deployed to replace the manual POS machines and specifically configured with user details as approved by the CBN, and all receipts printed are signed and thumprinted at the back by the issuing tax agents.

No doubt, the Chairman remains resolute in ensuring that revenue generation is improved and optimized. This is with his mission to make Benue State less dependent on federal allocations.
