A NonGovermental Organisation, BraveHeart Initiative for Youth & Women (BHI) have organized a three days wellness retreat for sexual & genderbased violence (SGBV) case workers in Edo State.
The three days Wellness Retreat which was held at Filani Palace Hotel and Suite, Ososo in Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo State and funded by the Open Society Foundation (OSIWA-OSF) enlightened SGBV Service Providers on importance of prioritizing their mental well-being, strengthened their capacities for SGBV programming and significantly improved referral pathways within the state.
The Wellness Retreat which took place from October 12-14, 2022 had Forty-Seven (47) Participants comprising of Thirty-Three representatives from 15 SGBV-Focused NGOs in the State, one delegate from the Edo State Ministry of Social Development & Humanitarian Affairs, one delegate from the Edo State Ministry of Youth & Gender Issues, three representatives from the Akoko-Edo Local Government Council, and nine delegates from BraveHeart Initiative’s partner health facilities (Alafia Specialist Clinic, Ifejola Special Hospital, General Hospital Igarra, Primary Health Center Ososo and Ojah as well as General Hospital Auchi.
The 3-day SGBV Caseworkers Wellness Retreat commenced with a study tour of BraveHeart Initiative’s Office situated at Igarra. Participants were enlightened on BHI’s operational and programmatic approaches for SGBV Projects. The next day, participants engaged in a tripartite wellness day comprising game sessions, a hike to Oke Hills at Ososo Tourist Centre, and a fitness walk from the Ososo Tourist Centre to Filani Palace Hotel & Suites.
There were participatory and fun-filled Technical Sessions that strengthened institutional capacities of participatory institutions for SGBV programming in Edo State. Participants were enlightened on BraveHeart Initiative’s SGBV Intervention Model and given practical tips for Managing SGBV Cases, Budgeting for SGBV Projects and were educated on professional ethics as well as SGBV Laws and Policies. The session on SGBV Laws was very insightful as many of the participants were not vast on the legal provisions and policy frameworks in Nigeria and specifically in Edo State.
The retreat ended with party where SGBV Case Workers, relaxed, unwind, detoxified and became rejuvenated. The party also promoted inclusivity and enhance team bonding among participants.
