The Edo State House of Assembly has passed a new law introducing the death penalty for kidnapping, replacing the previous punishment of life imprisonment.
During Tuesday’s plenary session, lawmakers reviewed and amended the 2013 Kidnapping Prohibition Law, strengthening penalties for offenders. The bill, now known as the 2025 State Kidnapping Prohibition Law, also mandates the confiscation of any property used in the commission of the crime.
The motion for a clause-by-clause consideration of the bill was moved by the Majority Leader, Charity Aiguobarueghian, and seconded by the Minority Leader, Henry Okaka, representing Owan East.
In addition to passing the new kidnapping law, the Assembly approved the repeal of the 2022 Edo State Electricity Law. The new legislation establishes the Edo State Electricity Market, the Edo State Electricity Regulatory Commission, and the Edo Electrification Agency, aiming to reform the state’s power sector.
Meanwhile, the House confirmed Mrs Kenny Okojie as the Chairperson of the Governing Board for the Edo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency.
