The burial of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, initially expected to take place today, has been officially postponed to Tuesday, 15 July, at 2 p.m. in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State announced the shift, citing the need to accommodate high-profile dignitaries, international guests, and to put in place adequate security arrangements.
“Given the calibre of individuals expected and the need for meticulous planning, we have moved the burial to Tuesday to ensure everything proceeds in an orderly and secure manner,” Radda said.
As of Monday, Daura is abuzz with activity, with residents and visitors alike making preparations for the final rites of the late former president. Security presence has been significantly heightened, especially around key locations such as the Emir’s Palace and Buhari’s family residence.
The burial will take place with full Islamic rites at Buhari’s family compound, and is expected to draw a wide range of mourners, including heads of state, diplomats, and top government officials.
President Bola Tinubu has ordered that the national flag be flown at half-mast for seven days as a mark of respect and mourning for Buhari, who passed away on Saturday in a London hospital at the age of 82.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, is being remembered across the nation for his influence on Nigerian politics and governance.
