The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified that the term “inconclusive elections” is not recognised under Nigeria’s electoral laws.
This was disclosed by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Kano State, Abdu Zango, during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the INEC headquarters in Kano on Thursday. The meeting formed part of preparations for the forthcoming bye-election and rerun polls scheduled for 16 August in Bagwai/Shanono and Ghari/Tsanyawa state constituencies.
Zango stated unequivocally that “there is no provision for inconclusive elections in the Electoral Act,” noting that although the term has been used in previous electoral cycles, it lacks any legal basis.
“INEC is guided strictly by the outcome of valid votes cast and recorded,” he said. “We are committed to conducting credible elections and will declare winners solely based on lawful and verifiable results.”
Providing further clarification, Zango explained that the bye-election in Bagwai/Shanono is being conducted to fill the vacancy created by the death of the serving legislator, while the rerun election in Ghari/Tsanyawa will take place in 10 polling units as mandated by a court ruling.
He also reassured stakeholders of INEC’s readiness, stating that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) will be used for voter accreditation, and that election results will be uploaded promptly to the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal to ensure transparency and public trust.
The REC urged all political actors and voters to cooperate with INEC officials to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.
