The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Olympian Yussuf Alli, has expressed his delight in the outstanding performance of Edo Queens Football Club in the CAF Women’s Champions League Zone B qualifiers.
The team finished at the top of their group with a perfect record, marking a triumphant debut in the CAF competition.
Alli praised the team’s achievements, particularly their recent 1-0 victory over Omnisports Etincelle of Burkina Faso, which secured their place in the semifinals. Speaking on the team’s success, Alli encouraged the players to maintain their momentum as they prepare to face the host team in the next stage of the tournament.
“I congratulate our girls. They have been spectacular since they started the CAF Champions League preliminaries in Côte d’Ivoire. Our Governor is pleased with their results and performance so far and has charged them to keep the momentum and bring the cup to Benin,” Alli enthused.
Edo Queens concluded their Group B campaign in the WAFU Zone B CAF Champions League qualifiers with an unbeaten record. Joy Jerry’s first-half goal secured a 1-0 win over Omnisports Etincelle on Saturday evening, cementing their position as group winners.
The reigning Nigeria Premier League champions began their journey in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, with a commanding 5-0 victory over AS Garde National of Niger Republic. They followed this up with an impressive 3-0 win against Ghana’s Hasaacas Ladies in their second group match.
With their victory over Omnisports Etincelle, Edo Queens advanced to the semifinals, where they will face D’Abidjan on Tuesday at Stade De La Paix in Bouaké. As the competition intensifies, the team remains focused on bringing home the prestigious trophy.
