The much-anticipated candlelight procession in honour of the late Ruth Otabor Bondon, younger sister of Big Brother Naija winner Phyna, has been suspended indefinitely following directives from Auchi Polytechnic authorities and security agencies.

In a statement issued by the organisers on Thursday, the institution reportedly raised concerns that the procession could escalate into a breach of public peace. The management further stated that Ruth, who tragically lost her life in a recent road accident, was no longer a student of the Polytechnic at the time of her passing.

“The Candlelight Procession in honour of Ruth Otabor Bondon, earlier scheduled, has been suspended indefinitely due to security concerns, safety of students, and other unforeseen circumstances. We deeply regret any inconvenience caused,” the organisers said.

The development has caused mixed reactions among students and sympathisers, many of whom had prepared to gather for the solemn tribute. While some expressed disappointment over the cancellation, others noted that security concerns should take precedence in view of the current fragile atmosphere in the town.

Ruth’s death had thrown her family, friends, and admirers into mourning, with tributes pouring in from across the country, particularly from Phyna’s fan base. The organisers, however, assured that alternative arrangements to honour her memory would be considered at a later date.
