The Catholic Diocese of Auchi has been thrown into mourning following the death of seminarian Emmanuel Alabi, who died in captivity months after being abducted by gunmen from the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary, Ivianokpodi, Agenebode, Edo State.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Directorate of Social Communications, Rev. Fr. Linus Imoedemhe recalled that Alabi was among three seminarians kidnapped on July 10, 2025, during a late-night attack on the seminary premises by heavily armed assailants. The others were Japhet Jesse and Joshua Aleobua.
Fr. Imoedemhe expressed gratitude to God for the earlier release of Japhet Jesse and most recently Joshua Aleobua, who regained his freedom on November 4, 2025, but announced with deep sorrow that Emmanuel Alabi lost his life while in captivity.
The Bishop of Auchi Diocese, Most Rev. Gabriel G. Dunia, described the death as “a painful reminder of the worsening state of insecurity in the country.” He lamented the loss of a young seminarian dedicated to his faith and called on security agencies to redouble efforts in safeguarding lives and property.
“As we mourn Emmanuel, we urge political leaders to prioritise the safety of Nigerians above political ambitions as the 2027 general elections draw near,” the Bishop said.
The Diocese has called on all the faithful and people of goodwill to pray for the repose of Alabi’s soul and for peace, healing, and security across Nigeria.
Reaffirming its commitment to faith, peace, and justice, the Church said it trusts in God’s mercy to comfort the bereaved family, the seminary community, and all affected by the tragedy.
