The Sharada community in Kano State has rolled out 29 new by-laws aimed at restoring moral values and curbing rising crime.
Among the measures is a ban on boyfriend-girlfriend meetings after 10 p.m., as well as a prohibition on lovers meeting in tinted vehicles. Horse riding during wedding celebrations has also been restricted, alongside a new requirement for lawyers and property agents to obtain approval from the village head before renting out accommodation.
The laws, announced by Village Head Alhaji Iliyasu Muazu Sharada, were agreed upon following consultations with ward heads and elders. They say the measures are necessary to tackle activities that often serve as a front for robbery, sexual harassment and other offences.
“We have arrested men pretending to be with girlfriends, only to find they were engaged in immoral or criminal acts,” said resident Alhaji Abdullahi Bello, noting that late-night meetings and tinted cars have become common tools for wrongdoers.
Sharada, a mixed residential and industrial area, has seen an increase in security challenges in recent years. Elders believe the by-laws will not only deter crime but also shield young people from negative influences.
The Chairman of Kano Municipal Local Government, Salim Hashim, pledged the council’s full backing, describing the rules as “a necessary step to protect both morality and community safety”.
