The Court of Appeal in Akure, Ondo State, has upheld the death sentence handed to hotel magnate Dr. Ramon Adedoyin for the murder of Timothy Adegoke, a former Master’s student at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

The ruling, delivered on Thursday, confirmed the decision of the Osun State High Court, which had earlier convicted Adedoyin for the killing of Adegoke. The appeal, which was heard by the appellate court on October 29, 2024, sought to challenge the initial verdict but was dismissed in part.

In its judgment, the Court of Appeal stated: “The judgment of the High Court of Osun State stands. Adedoyin’s appeal is dismissed in part. The Court of Appeal held that Adedoyin was properly convicted and sentenced to death.”

The appellate court also made a critical decision regarding other aspects of the original ruling. It quashed and set aside the order for the forfeiture of Hilton Hotel, which had been directed as part of the sentence, as well as the directive for Dr. Adedoyin to provide a scholarship to the children of the late Timothy Adegoke.

Timothy Adegoke’s death in November 2021 at Hilton Honours Hotel in Ile-Ife, where he had been staying, had led to a high-profile investigation and trial. His tragic death sparked widespread public outrage and brought attention to the issues surrounding the hotel and its management.

Adedoyin’s legal team had hoped to overturn the death sentence, but Thursday’s decision by the Court of Appeal ensures the conviction remains in place.
