A Benin High Court has ordered the remand of a 22-year-old man, Habibu Salisu, also known as Abebu Uahiyin, in a correctional centre for allegedly committing attempted murder and armed robbery.

Presiding over the case, Justice Rachel Ogbevoen issued the remand order during a court sitting held in Benin City on Monday. The defendant is to be held at the Oko Correctional Centre for an initial period of 14 days pending legal advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) in Edo State.

According to the prosecuting counsel, Mr Polycap Odion, the offences were committed on 27 April 2025 in Orior 1 Community, located near Benin City. Odion informed the court that Salisu, during the course of the alleged robbery, attacked one Mr Kayode Ogunbiyi and stole his Vivo V16 Android mobile phone, valued at ₦120,000.

The prosecutor further alleged that the accused was armed with a gun and other dangerous weapons at the time of the incident. In addition to the robbery, Salisu is also facing a charge of attempted murder for reportedly trying to kill Mr Ogunbiyi during the attack.

Salisu was arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on attempted murder and armed robbery. The charges are said to contravene Section 243(a) of the Criminal Law of Edo State, 2022, and Section 1(2)(a) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap R11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

In a motion ex parte, Mr Odion cited relevant statutory provisions and urged the court to remand the defendant in a correctional facility to allow time for further investigation and for the DPP to issue formal legal advice.

Justice Ogbevoen granted the request and adjourned the case to 4 June 2025 for further hearing.
