The Edo State Police Command has undergone a leadership change following a series of violent incidents, including the recent killing of northern travellers in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area. The Police Service Commission has appointed Monday Agbonika as the new Commissioner of Police for Edo State, replacing CP Betty Enekpen Isokpan Otimenyin.
Agbonika, formerly with the Police Mounted Troop, has been tasked with restoring security and preventing reprisals following the recent violence. His appointment followed a posting interview conducted by the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Hashimu Argungu, alongside retired Supreme Court Justice Paul Adamu Galumje and the Commission’s Secretary, Chief Onyemuche Nnamani.
In a statement signed by Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations, the Commission urged the new Commissioner to act swiftly in addressing security challenges in the state. He has been advised to investigate the recent killings thoroughly and ensure that those arrested in connection with the incidents are properly processed under the law.
“You must earn the confidence of the public, engage with key stakeholders, and maintain clear records of incidents and actions taken,” the Commission advised, emphasising the need for transparency and collaboration. Agbonika was also cautioned against sidelining essential police departments in favour of tactical units.
In response, CP Agbonika assured the Commission of his commitment to upholding the law and adhering to guidance from the Inspector General of Police.
A seasoned officer with 32 years of experience, Agbonika has held several key positions in law enforcement, including Commissioner of Police for Communications (Operations), Deputy Commissioner at Interpol, and various operational and administrative roles across Nigeria. Prior to his latest appointment, he served as the Force Equitation Officer at Police Headquarters.
His new role in Edo State will be closely watched as he takes on the challenge of improving security and maintaining law and order in the State.
