The newly appointed Commander of the Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mitchell Ofoyeju, has declared a renewed crackdown on drug trafficking and cultivation in the state, warning those involved to desist or face the full force of the law.
Commander Ofoyeju, who until recently headed the NDLEA’s Tin-Can Island Strategic Command, takes over the reins in Edo as part of a wider redeployment strategy aimed at strengthening operational effectiveness across the agency. His move forms a key component of NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa’s ongoing efforts to streamline the fight against drug-related crimes nationwide.
In a statement made available to Uptown Press Nigeria, Commander Ofoyeju outlined his mission to disrupt the illicit drug trade in Edo, particularly targeting cannabis cultivation and trafficking networks that have long plagued the region.
“We are not here to tolerate drug criminals. Those who are involved in this illicit business must either quit now or prepare to be arrested and prosecuted,” Ofoyeju warned.
He emphasised that the NDLEA under his watch would be relentless in pursuing those responsible for fuelling addiction and crime through drug distribution, noting that effective drug control is integral to the safety and well-being of communities.
“Drugs are closely tied to crime and societal decay. As a nation, we cannot afford to let our youths fall victim to the destructive grip of drug abuse,” he added.
During his tenure at Tin-Can Island, Commander Ofoyeju was credited with several high-profile drug seizures and a notable increase in public awareness campaigns. His track record of leadership and results is expected to strengthen the anti-narcotics efforts in Edo.
Highlighting the importance of public collaboration, he called on residents to support the agency’s operations and report suspicious activities. “This is a collective battle. We need the cooperation of everyone to rid our state of the drug menace,” he said.
The Commander also reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the NDLEA’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative, which seeks to address both the supply and demand aspects of the narcotics trade.
With this appointment, the agency hopes to deepen its reach and efficacy in tackling drug crimes in Edo State and beyond.
