Cuba has officially blamed the United States for the deaths of 32 Cuban nationals during a recent U.S. military operation in Venezuela, according to the Cuban government.
The fatalities occurred over the weekend during the U.S. raid in Caracas that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were flown to the United States to face prosecution on charges including drug trafficking and terrorism.
In a statement read on Cuban national television, Havana said the deceased were members of Cuba’s armed forces and intelligence agencies carrying out missions in Venezuela “at the request of counterpart agencies.” It described the operation as a criminal attack, asserting that the Cubans “fulfilled their duty with dignity and heroism,” falling either in direct combat or from bombings during the assault.
In response to the incident, Cuba declared two days of national mourning and pledged to organize tributes for the fallen officers. President Miguel Díaz-Canel honored the victims, praising their service and courage.
The U.S. government has acknowledged some casualties among Cuban forces but maintains that no American lives were lost during the operation.
