Hisbah seals meat shop over alleged sale of unwholesome poultry products
Operatives of the Hisbah Commission, the Sharia law enforcement agency in Bauchi State, have arrested a man accused of selling dead chicken meat to unsuspecting residents. The suspect, identified as Aminu Jalaba, was apprehended at his meat shop, which has since been sealed by authorities.
According to the Bauchi State Commissioner for Health, Dr Aminu Balarabe, the arrest followed a tip-off from concerned citizens who alleged that the suspect was involved in the sale of already-dead poultry to the public — a practice deemed dangerous and illegal.
“This kind of activity is not only hazardous to public health, but it is strictly prohibited under Section 398 of the 2021 Bauchi State Sharia Laws, which forbids the sale, transport or distribution of dead animal products,” Dr Balarabe told journalists during an inspection visit to the Muhda Lawan market where the incident occurred.
He added that, “We received credible information that someone was purchasing and reselling dead chickens. This is a direct threat to food safety and public well-being, and we will not tolerate it.”
Joining in condemnation of the act, the State Commissioner for Religious Affairs and Societal Orientation, Mohammed Binni, said the state government was taking the matter seriously. He disclosed that Governor Bala Mohammed has expressed deep concern over the incident and has ordered a thorough investigation to ensure all parties involved are brought to justice.
“The Governor is very disturbed by this report. He has instructed that full legal action be taken to protect our people from such disgraceful and harmful practices,” Binni stated.
The suspect is currently in custody, and investigations are ongoing. Authorities have also urged residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious meat products or vendors to the appropriate agencies.
