General Christopher Mustapha, Chief of Defence Staff, declared that flying foreign flags within Nigeria constitutes a treasonable offense.
This statement followed an emergency security session with President Bola Tinubu at Aso Rock, where the General emphasized that those involved in such activities would face legal consequences.

Addressing the media, General Mustapha condemned the act of flying Russian flags within Nigerian territory, asserting that it undermines national sovereignty. “We have seen foreign flags flown within the sovereignty of Nigeria, and that is totally unacceptable. This is a treasonable offense and will be treated as such,” he stated. The Defence Chief highlighted that individuals, particularly youth, are being manipulated to engage in these activities, and assured that the authorities are tracking down those responsible.

The General also issued a stern warning to those advocating for a coup, reaffirming the military’s commitment to democracy. “Nigeria is a sovereign, democratic nation. All security agencies are here to defend democracy and ensure it continues to thrive. We will not accept any actions aimed at changing the government undemocratically,” he declared.

General Mustapha expressed concern over recent riots, noting that they have escalated beyond peaceful protests to criminal activities, including looting and theft. “Criminals have taken over, and we are witnessing a lot of looting, stealing, and other forms of lawlessness,” he observed. He assured the public that the military and other security agencies are working in synergy to restore order and ensure peace.

The Chief of Defence Staff reiterated President Tinubu’s instructions to maintain peace and order in Nigeria. “The President has made it clear that we must not tolerate any attempts to disrupt the peace and tranquility of our nation. We are united in our efforts to protect Nigeria’s sovereignty and democratic integrity,” he affirmed.
