A diphtheria outbreak in Edo State has prompted an emergency meeting led by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, following confirmation of five cases, including two fatalities, by the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
The urgent meeting, held with heads of key health institutions, representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and other critical health partners, was convened in response to the growing concern over the spread of the disease.
Dr Oshiomhole described the outbreak as a serious public health threat, stressing the need for swift, coordinated action across all levels of the health system. He explained that diphtheria is a bacterial infection that primarily affects the nose and throat, spreading easily through coughing, sneezing, or close personal contact. Without prompt treatment, he warned, the disease could lead to severe complications or even death.
“The outbreak has raised serious concern and requires immediate, collective action,” Dr Oshiomhole stated. “This incident, alongside rising challenges such as viral infections and antibiotic resistance, underscores the urgent need to strengthen our health response mechanisms.”
He outlined key areas of focus for the emergency response, including the establishment of a rapid response team, improved coordination between state and local authorities, enhanced case surveillance, contact tracing, effective case management, public awareness campaigns, and securing adequate vaccine supply.
Commending UBTH for its swift response, the Health Commissioner thanked all partners for their ongoing support. He also conveyed the full backing of the Edo State Governor for any necessary interventions aimed at containing the outbreak and protecting communities.
