Nigeria’s new Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, has been told in clear terms to protect human rights and avoid the mistakes of his predecessor.
The warning came from outspoken human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, in a fiery social media post on Friday, following Hundeyin’s appointment by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Effiong, who worked with Hundeyin during his stint as Police PRO in Lagos, praised him as “a fine officer” with good intentions but cautioned that Nigerians expect more than empty words.
“Please know that we do not expect you to tow the ignoble path of your predecessor, DCP Muyiwa Adejobi. He went to great lengths to embarrass himself and the institution of the police. He had little regard for human rights,” Effiong declared.
The activist stressed that all eyes are now on Hundeyin as he takes up the high-profile role in Abuja, warning that failure to uphold human rights would tarnish his credibility.
“A lot of people are waiting to see how you’ll navigate your new role. The eyes of the country are upon you,” he said.
Effiong, however, ended on a note of encouragement, wishing Hundeyin the courage and wisdom to perform his duties honourably.
