As Christians worldwide observe Ash Wednesday, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, has called on believers to prioritise their faith and deepen their commitment to God.

In a statement, the Speaker emphasised the significance of the day, noting that life itself is sustained by divine mercy. He reminded Christians that Ash Wednesday serves as a solemn occasion to reflect on the transient nature of human existence and the necessity of spiritual accountability.

“Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, introspection, and spiritual renewal leading up to Easter,” Agbebaku stated. “It is a time to acknowledge the brevity of life and embrace the call to repentance, ensuring that we lead lives with purpose and devotion.”

Quoting Genesis 3:19, he stressed the symbolic importance of the ashes, saying, “For dust you are and to dust you shall return.” He urged Christians to see this as a reminder of human frailty and the ultimate victory over death through Christ’s resurrection.

The Speaker further encouraged the faithful to use this sacred season for sincere reflection, repentance, and renewed dedication to their spiritual journey, reaffirming the essence of Ash Wednesday as a moment to seek God’s guidance and grace.
