That Owan students have to travel outside their shores before they could get registered for JAMB and other associated examinations due to the absence of needed facilities to enrol them for such examinations has caught the attention of member representing Owan Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Hon Prof Julius Ihonvbere.
Towards this end, Representative Ihonvbere has promised to build two Computer Based Test (CBT) centres,one in each of the two LGAs that comprise the Owan Federal Constituency next year.
Ihonvbere dropped this cheering news on Tuesday when he made a brief stop over at the venue of the training program his office facilitated for Owan teachers on contemporary models of teaching in the post COVID-19 era’ where he addressed the participants. The Erudite lawmaker described as unacceptable the usual practice where secondary school leavers from Owan travel to other parts of the state and even the country at large before they can enrol and take very significant examinations like JAMB and a few others which determines their future aspirations in life, adding that the trend must stop. He said he has put in the 2022 budget the construction of two fully furnished CBT centres in each of Owan East and Owan West Local Government Areas.
On where the centres will be located,Prof Ihonvbere explained that relevant stakeholders in the educational sector in the two local government areas will be consulted with a view to determining the most appropriate communities to host the CBT centres.
On the necessity for the teachers training program,Prof Julius Ihonvbere who is Chairman House Committee on Basic Education and Services noted that as an academic,he is fully aware that the need for training and re-training of teachers to catch up with modern trends and ever changing dynamics of the profession cannot be overstressed, adding that the topic for the training program ‘Contemporary Models of Teaching In The Post COVID-19 Era’was conceptualized with the hope that by now the pandemic would have either been totally eradicated or drastically degraded but that unfortunately,new variants of the scourge are emerging across the globe .
He urged the participants to remain vigilant always and inculcate in their pupils (who are the end target of the program) various preventive and contemporary ways of handling emergencies associated with the pandemic. Ihonvbere promised to ensure that regular training programs in all spheres of the teaching profession are organized for teachers in Owan schools.
Speaking on behalf of the elated teachers who received their Rep member into the venue with a standing ovation and wide applause,Mr Akhilemon Akhigbe expressed the participants appreciation to Prof Julius Ihonvbere. He noted that apart from the fact that the Owan Rep facilitated the training program for teachers where they are benefitting immensely from by expanding their scope and knowledge of the COVID-19 pandemic,he deemed it fit to personally put up appearance at the venue of the training program to see how the participants are faring.
He described this attitude as not only unique but a clear display of the hallmark of leadership and noted that this is the first time in the history of Owan that a training program will be organized for teachers by any government functionary.
The three day training program which had resource persons drawn from the academia and health Institutions, including the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Nigeria Institute for Education Planning and Administration (NIEPA),where over one hundred teachers participated ended last Wednesday.
