A lawmaker, Senator Neda Imasuen, representing Edo South Senatorial District, has announced plans to train and empower 120 farmers across the seven Local Government Areas in the district.
The lawmaker made this revelation during his visit to the Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the Press Centre in Benin City on Tuesday.
Senator Imasuen stated that, the initiative is aimed at enabling farmers to become self-sufficient and eventually grow into employers of labor. “We want to teach them how to fish; we don’t want to keep giving them fish all the time. They should know how to catch fish,” he said, highlighting the importance of self-reliance in economic empowerment.
The training which will commence on Wednesday at the NUJ Main Hall will have farmers receive stipends to support them during the program. Senator Imasuen disclosed that the initiative is part of a broader effort that includes the training of 10 tailors, who have been relocated to Abuja with free accommodation for a period ranging from six months to one year.
The lawmaker also highlighted his achievements in infrastructure development within the district, noting that 76 solar lights have been installed across 117 streets in four Local Government Areas in Edo South.
Addressing concerns about delays in the execution of some of his constituency projects, Senator Imasuen attributed the setbacks to the delay in the implementation of the 2024 budget and the slow release of funds. However, he expressed confidence that contractors would be mobilized to complete most of the ongoing projects before the end of the year.
Senator Imasuen further pledged to collaborate with the Edo NUJ to ensure that all projects receive adequate publicity and are properly monitored for transparency and accountability.
In response, the Chairman of the NUJ Edo State Council, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, assured the Senator of the Union’s readiness to assist in publicizing his developmental efforts. Alenkhe expressed confidence in the Senator’s vision and reaffirmed the NUJ’s commitment to supporting the delivery of good governance in Edo State.
He said: “If you don’t blow your trumpet to let the people know what you are doing for them in terms of empowerment and employment. they will assume that you are not doing anything. You can trust the NUJ to do the necessary publicity for you.”
