Edo government arrests saw miller for child labour

On Monday, 26th September, 2022, a sawmiller was arrested by School O’clock team of the Ministry of Education in Edo State as a result of using a child named Samuel Osabuohien, age 12 to carry out his labourer work during School hour.

A statement from Egor Education Secretary, Erhahon Nosa recounts:

“The father ( Samuel Osayuwa) of the said child reported at his School ( Olua PS) that he traced his child who dressed to be going to school to a sawmill.

“The head teacher alerted the Egor Education Secretary, Erhahon Nosa who in turn followed them to the said sawmill beside Uselu market and confirmed the claims to be true as the child was actually there. He thereafter alerted the School O’clock team.

“The offender Mr Osariemen Edegbe denied never knowing the child before but the child proved him wrong after narrating how he comes there in company of other children to work for the man.

“His union pleaded that they will henceforth ensure such never repeated itself again but we ignored their plea as justice must prevail.

“He was arrested by the security personnels given to us by CSO from government House and taken to Ugbowo police division.

“We documented our report and was asked to come Tuesday 27th September, 2022 to see the person in charge as he was not on seat when we were there. The offender was put behind bars.”
