Edo govt celebrates 100th International Day of cooperative

The Edo State government on Saturday commemorates the 100th International Cooperative Day.

In her remark on behalf of the government, the Commissioner, Edo State Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives, Hon. Afishetu Braimoh said that the aim is to sensitized members on partnership to achieve cooperative goals.

“We are using this opportunity to increase awareness on the vital roles played by Cooperatives within our local communities and our nation.

“This day also allows us all to reflect on the achievement of Cooperatives, not only in advancing the interest and improving the welfare of members but also their contribution to economic prosperity, individual and collective growth, and equality.

“Today provides an opportunity for us to strengthen and extend partnership between the Co-operative s, other bodies and our government. These collaboration structures and synergies are not just at local or domestic levels but are increasingly at regional and global levels.

“Here in Edo State, our political, social and economic development is inextricably tied with growth of Co-operative societies. We continue to see a significant increase in registrations since we embarked on a massive awareness campaign in second quarter of 2022, with over 900 registered Co-operative societies with approximately 200 newly registered Cooperatives in the past two months, over 100 re-verifications and trainings, our diverse Co-operative sector is expected to see significant growth that will no doubt help to improve the lives of itsits members, tap into opportopportunities and build a better world.”

She added that Co-operative societies, if well handled can be used to achieve societal unity through coming together for the common good, through hardwork, enterprise, sacrifice and unyielding commitment to positive goals.

She explained that the Edo State government is poised to serve as facilitator and enabler to clear the path for Co-operatives so that they and their members can realize their full potential.

To this end, she said, the MITC is collaborating with GIZ to initiate a number of policies and regulatory measures which are designed to create an enabling environment for Co-operative enterprises to strive.
