The Edo State Government has officially inaugurated a multi-agency taskforce charged with enforcing legal mining practices across the State.
The initiative, spearheaded by the State Ministry of Mining in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Solid Mineral Development, was formally launched during a ceremony at the Ministry’s Conference Hall in Benin City. The event was led by Edo State Commissioner for Mining, Honourable Andrew Ijegbai, and witnessed the presence of top officials including Permanent Secretary Mrs Ese Martina Omoruyi, Federal Zonal Mines Officer representative Mr Onimisi, Deputy Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr Richard Akin, and stakeholder Mr Kelly Okungbowa, among others.
Hon Ijegbai expressed gratitude to Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo for backing the initiative, describing it as a bold stride toward sanitising the State’s mining sector. He emphasised the Governor’s commitment to creating a business-friendly environment where activities are conducted transparently and within the confines of the law.
“The Governor is keen on promoting investment in Edo, but it must be through the proper channels. Only by enforcing legal compliance can we ensure that the State and its people benefit fully,” Ijegbai said.
He charged the taskforce to uphold the rule of law, resist corrupt practices, and serve as role models in their conduct. He also reiterated that collaboration with the Federal Ministry was essential to closing gaps that allow illicit operations to thrive.
Commissioner Ijegbai further encouraged miners to participate in the ongoing verification exercise, describing it as an important step in distinguishing legal operators from violators and enabling prosecution where necessary. He lauded the NSCDC for its steadfast support and called for continued cooperation to secure progress in the sector.
Speaking at the event, Permanent Secretary Omoruyi highlighted the importance of the taskforce’s mission in correcting malpractice, boosting state revenue, and protecting the environment for future generations. She urged miners to regularise their operations and abide by State regulations.
Mr Kelly Okungbowa added a note of caution to the new taskforce members, advising them to set a strong example and maintain transparency in their enforcement duties. He assured them of the Commissioner’s commitment to supporting their success.
Newly appointed Taskforce Chairman, Mr Okpamen Bello, pledged dedication to the mandate and warned operators against non-compliance, affirming that the group would enforce the law without fear or favour.
