The Edo State Government says it is moving decisively to contain the recent diphtheria outbreak reported in parts of the State.
Governor Monday Okpebholo has activated an emergency public health response to tackle the situation and protect residents, according to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua.
The governor is personally overseeing surveillance and containment efforts in close collaboration with the State Ministry of Health and other key agencies. Interventions already under way include the procurement of life-saving vaccines for a statewide immunisation campaign, with a focus on vulnerable groups such as children.
Public awareness campaigns across radio, television, social media and grassroots networks are also in full swing to inform citizens about diphtheria symptoms, preventive measures and the need for prompt treatment.
In addition, all hospitals in the state have been placed on high alert. Medical teams are on standby to detect, isolate and manage suspected cases in line with national and international protocols. Health workers have been briefed and equipped to mount an effective response, while enhanced surveillance networks are tracking potential contacts.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Cyril Oshiomhole, is spearheading the medical intervention and providing regular updates as the state’s emergency health task force works to stem the spread.
Schools are playing a key role too, with school owners and proprietors stepping up health screenings and adopting strict hygiene standards to protect schoolchildren.
Governor Okpebholo has also convened a multi-sectoral emergency meeting, drawing together representatives from the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), traditional and religious leaders, civil society and community groups.
The Government assured the public that all necessary measures have been put in place and urged citizens to remain calm but vigilant. Residents who experience sore throat, fever, swollen glands or breathing difficulties are advised to visit the nearest healthcare facility without delay.
“Edo State has successfully managed public health emergencies before and this will be no exception,” the governor said. “We call on everyone to support our health teams as we work to contain this outbreak.”
