The Edo State government has pledged urgent relief for victims displaced by the recent violent clashes in Ovia South West Local Government Area. The Executive Secretary of the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EdoSEMA), Jerry Idahosa, alongside the Head of Operations at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ojuedorie Kenoma, confirmed to Uptown Press NG that plans are underway to distribute relief materials and provide necessary interventions.
They urged affected residents to remain calm and law-abiding while the authorities conduct a thorough investigation to identify those responsible for the attacks. Calls have also intensified for the establishment of a military base and more police stations in the region to prevent further violence.
Reports indicate that heavily armed militants, allegedly from an Ijaw community, launched coordinated assaults on eight villages, including Madoiti, Agolobi, Taye, and Dipe. The attacks have left at least 22 people dead, with several others missing. Homes, farmlands, and harvested crops worth millions of naira have been destroyed, leading to severe economic losses in these predominantly agrarian communities.
The Edo State government has assured residents that security efforts are being intensified to track down the perpetrators and prevent further bloodshed. Authorities continue to appeal for cooperation from the public as investigations and response efforts progress.
