The Edo State Executive Council has announced the revocation of the appointments of three traditional rulers in the State, following a meeting held on Wednesday, 30 April 2025. The decision comes after a review of the appointments, with the State government highlighting issues related to customary law and governance.

Umar Musa Ikhilor, the Secretary to the State Government, disclosed that the appointment of Umoru Inusa Umoru as the Aidenogie of South Ibie, in Etsako West Local Government Area, had been revoked. The position will now be held by Alhaji Aliyu Kelvin Danesi, whose previous appointment was overturned. Ikhilor explained that the revocation was based on the fact that the stool of Aidenogie was not vacant at the time of Umoru’s appointment.

The State government also revoked the appointment of Lukman Akemokue as the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella in Etsako East Local Government Area. This decision follows Akemokue’s failure to adhere to the Bendel State Legal Notice 132 of 1979, which governs succession to the throne. As a result, the government has set in motion the process to select a new Okuokpellagbe in compliance with established customary laws.

In another move, Dr. George Oshiapi Egabor’s appointment as the Okumagbe of Uwano Kingdom, Agenebode, was also revoked. Dr. Egabor had previously been suspended due to ongoing issues of kidnapping and killings in his domain. The State government has now initiated a process to select a new ruler for Uwano Kingdom, in accordance with Edo State’s legal framework.
