The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Edo State Council, has called off its planned industrial action following a series of resolutions reached with the state government on issues affecting its members.
This decision was contained in a communiqué issued after a crucial meeting between the Union, the Head of Service, and other government officials in Benin City on 19 October 2025.
The meeting was convened after the Union threatened to embark on an industrial action if its demands were not met.
At the end of deliberations, both parties agreed on key issues, including the immediate processing of all pending promotions for staff of the Edo State Primary Health Care Development Agency. The training and evaluation of eligible staff are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, 21 October 2025.
It was further resolved that the promotion test and evaluation exercise should not be computer-based for now and that the process be decentralised to allow for convenience.
On the demand for a salary review, it was agreed that a joint committee comprising representatives of the Union and officials from the Accountant-General’s office would be set up to work out modalities for implementing the reviewed National CONHESS structure.
The communiqué also stated that the monthly housing fund deduction would be suspended pending clarification by the Accountant-General on the status of previously collected funds.
Other welfare issues raised by the Union are said to be receiving due attention in the office of the Accountant-General.
Both parties further agreed to reconvene on Tuesday, 21 October 2025, to monitor progress on the resolutions reached.
The Head of Service reaffirmed Governor Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to the welfare of health workers and the entire Edo State workforce, describing them as vital to the success of government policies in the health sector.
Following these assurances, the Union’s leadership directed all its members to return to work immediately, effectively calling off the planned strike action.
