Edo Lawmaker Bags Traders’ Merit Award As Union Calls for Stronger Market Reforms

The member representing Oredo West in the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Dr Richard Osaro Edosa, has been awarded a Merit Award by the Traders’ Welfare Union of Nigeria, underscoring growing pressure on policymakers to confront the persistent challenges facing traders across the State.

The recognition was presented on Saturday during the Union’s 2025 Thanksgiving event themed “Challenges of Edo Traders”, where market leaders highlighted concerns over illegal taxation, harassment, insecurity, and declining economic conditions affecting commerce in Edo’s bustling markets.

In a statement acknowledging the honour, Dr Edosa described the award as particularly meaningful because it came from those who “keep our markets vibrant and our local economy moving.” Although absent from the ceremony, he expressed deep appreciation to Comrade Lucky Orukpe and the Union’s leadership for what he called their “continuous stand against oppression.”

The lawmaker, who also serves as Deputy Chief Whip of the Edo Assembly, pledged stronger legislative support to create a safer and fairer trading environment, noting that market forces remain essential to Edo’s economic stability.

The award comes at a time of rising concern from market unions over extortion, security lapses and informal levies imposed by non-state actors — issues that have increasingly drawn attention within government circles. The Union’s public commendation of a sitting legislator signals an expectation of more assertive action from the Assembly.

Dr Edosa reaffirmed his commitment to collaborate with traders’ groups, saying he would continue to advocate policies that enhance their welfare and strengthen economic activity in Oredo West and beyond.

As Edo’s commercial backbone demands greater protection and reform, the honour places fresh spotlight on the political will required to address the unresolved pressures confronting thousands of traders across the State.
