The Executive Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council in Edo State, Dr. Tom Osaze Obaseki, has strongly condemned the alleged impeachment attempt against him as an act of criminality and lawlessness. He has called for a full police investigation into the incident.
In a statement issued to the press, Obaseki responded to a video circulating on social media, which purportedly showed his impeachment. He described the footage as a fabrication, orchestrated by thugs who unlawfully entered the council’s legislative chamber.
“My attention has been drawn to a video circulating on various media platforms purportedly showing my impeachment as the Executive Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council,” said Obaseki.
“I urge the public to disregard this video entirely, as it is the result of a criminal act carried out by hoodlums who unlawfully invaded the legislative arm of the council. These individuals impersonated the legitimate councillors, who are currently on recess, in a failed attempt to subvert the democratic will of the people of Oredo.”
Obaseki emphasised that the actions of those involved represented a serious violation of law and order. “This act represents the height of criminality and lawlessness, which cannot and will not be tolerated in a civilised society like Oredo. I remain the duly elected Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council, having been given the mandate to serve by the good people of Oredo on the 2nd of September, 2023.”
He further cautioned that if such unlawful behaviour were allowed to stand, it could set a dangerous precedent. “If this level of impunity is permitted, then tomorrow anyone could wake up, invade a government house, and declare themselves governor or president. Such a scenario is unthinkable in a lawful society. We are not a banana republic where anarchy reigns.”
As the Chief Security Officer of the Local Government, Obaseki has urged the Divisional Police Officer of Oba Market Division to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice. “I call on the police to immediately investigate this matter and arrest those involved for criminal trespass, impersonation, and attempted subversion of democracy.”
Reassuring his supporters, Obaseki affirmed his continued commitment to the people of Oredo. “I assure the people of Oredo that the mandate they entrusted to me remains intact. I will continue to serve diligently and uphold the rule of law. Let us all remain calm and law-abiding while the authorities carry out their investigation.”
