The Edo State Market Women Association has taken to the streets in a peaceful protest against what they describe as the attempted imposition of an Iyaloja by external forces.
The demonstration, held around the King Square axis and Oba Market in Benin City, was aimed at voicing their opposition to a planned installation scheduled for this Thursday.
The market women, led by Blackky Ogiamen and representing members from the three senatorial districts of Edo State, expressed their strong disapproval of the alleged plan to install an Iyaloja of Edo Market Women by Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, the current Iyaloja of Lagos. Ogiamen, speaking on behalf of the association, emphasized that such an action is seen as an imposition on their autonomy.
“Our association is non-partisan and has maintained a cooperative relationship with successive governments in Edo State,” Ogiamen stated. “We vehemently reject this alleged plan. It is an act of imposition and a threat to the peace and harmony we have enjoyed.”
The women vowed to resist any actions that could undermine the stability of their association. They called on stakeholders to respect the independence and self-governance of the Edo State Market Women Association, warning that any attempt to impose leadership from outside would be met with staunch opposition.
As the protest continues, the market women remain firm in their stance, determined to protect their rights and the integrity of their organization. The coming days will be crucial as they await responses from relevant authorities and stakeholders regarding their concerns.
