Labour applauds massive job creation, wage increase, school revival, and renewed hope across Edo State
The Edo State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has congratulated Governor Monday Okpebholo and his administration on their first anniversary in office, describing the past year as one of *“practical, purposeful, and people-oriented governance.”
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Bernard Joman Egwekhide, the Congress praised the governor’s performance across key sectors, noting that his “comrade-style leadership” has delivered visible progress and rekindled workers’ confidence in government.
According to the NLC, the Okpebholo administration has made remarkable achievements within a year, employing over 6,000 teachers, renovating more than 60 schools, and approving an additional 3,000 new teaching positions to further strengthen the state’s education system.
At Usen Polytechnic, workers who once earned ₦18,000 and were owed five years’ salary arrears now enjoy a ₦75,000 minimum wage, with all arrears cleared. Similarly, staff of the College of Education, Ekiadolor, who were previously retired without pay, are now receiving their entitlements.
The NLC also hailed improvements in the health sector, noting that over 60 primary healthcare centres have been refurbished across the 18 local government areas, alongside the recruitment of more than 1,000 healthcare professionals.
The Congress further commended the government’s commitment to workers’ welfare, citing the approval of the new ₦75,000 minimum wage, regular promotions, capacity-building programmes, and the massive boost in subvention to Ambrose Alli University, from ₦41 million to ₦500 million monthly.
On infrastructure, the statement lauded the construction of over 250 kilometres of roads and two new flyover bridges in Edo South, describing the projects as key drivers of economic growth and urban renewal.
The NLC also applauded the governor’s efforts in tackling insecurity, with the procurement of over 60 operational vehicles and the recruitment of 2,000 personnel for the State Security Corps, which has “greatly improved safety and public confidence.”
The statement equally noted major strides in transport and social welfare, including the reintroduction of the Edo Line Transport Company, regularisation of over 100 casual ECTS workers, and the conversion of 370 casual cleaners to permanent staff, all now earning the ₦75,000 minimum wage.
Pensioners were also not left behind, as the government earmarked ₦1 billion to clear outstanding pension arrears.
The Congress praised the governor’s focus on practical governance, describing it as “focused, decisive, and result-driven.”
“A new Edo has indeed risen,” the statement declared. “Governor Okpebholo’s first year has restored hope, dignity, and progress to Edo workers and citizens alike.”
Reaffirming its commitment to industrial harmony, the NLC pledged continued partnership with the government to advance the state’s development agenda.
“Once again, congratulations, Mr Governor. The NLC Edo State Council and its affiliates shall continue to maintain peaceful industrial relations and work with you to take Edo to the state of El Dorado,” the statement concluded.
