The long-running cult clash between the Vikings and Aye groups has taken a deadly turn in Edo North, with another cultist gunned down near Auchi. The attack, which occurred in the Jattu area of Etsako West Local Government, claimed the life of Abdul Azeez Momodu, a member of the Jurist cult group.

According to sources from Naija Confra, the target of the attack was allegedly a Vikings cultist. However, due to mistaken identity, Azeez was gunned down while resting outside after a meal. The assailants mistook him for the Vikings member he was visiting, as both men had similar appearances — same beards and shirtless torsos. Azeez was shot in the head.

The killing has enraged the Jurist cult group, signalling an escalation in the long-standing rivalry between the Aye and Vikings. What began as a conflict between the two groups now threatens to draw in others, making the situation even more precarious.

Residents are calling on the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, to take urgent action in Auchi, akin to the measures implemented in Benin City, highlighting the vulnerability of the area and the shortcomings of existing anti-cultism strategies.

As of the time of filing this report, the Edo State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement.

The situation in Auchi is tense, and local authorities are under pressure to respond swiftly to prevent further bloodshed and restore order.
