The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, has lauded Governor Monday Okpebholo for his administration’s robust clampdown on cult-related violence across the State, describing the move as vital to restoring law and order and ensuring the safety of citizens.
The well-attended Congress, which brought together members from all 15 affiliated chapels, was also graced by the Deputy National President of the NUJ, Comrade Abimbola Oyetunde.
During deliberations, the Congress urged the Edo State Government to sustain its current tempo in the anti-cultism campaign, noting that a consistent and holistic approach would be key to securing lasting peace in communities across the State.
Turning to environmental matters, the union raised concerns about the threats posed by seasonal flooding and called on the state government to take urgent, preventive measures ahead of the peak of the rainy season. It further urged residents living in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and, if necessary, seek temporary relocation to safer areas to avoid disaster.
While acknowledging the progress made on the Ramat Park flyover project at Ikpoba Hill, the NUJ appealed to the contractors to rehabilitate nearby access roads to ease the current strain on residents navigating the area during the ongoing construction.
The Congress also condemned the activities of certain youth leaders, known locally as Okaigheles, who have reportedly been extorting land developers under the pretext of community development charges. It warned that such actions could deter investors and undermine the state government’s urban development efforts.
On the political front, the union advised politicians in Edo to embrace peaceful, issue-based politics ahead of the forthcoming elections. It urged them to shun divisive rhetoric and instead prioritise unity and development in their engagements.
The Congress rounded off by congratulating the national leadership of the NUJ on the union’s 70th anniversary, describing the milestone as a celebration of the courage, resilience, and professionalism of journalists nationwide.
