The 2024 edition of the Edo NUJ Picnic gathered journalists from across Edo State for a day of camaraderie and reflection.

Held in Benin City, the event, now in its third year, was organised by the Edo State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) under the leadership of its Chairman, Dr. Festus Alenkhe.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Alenkhe stressed the importance of maintaining neutrality and professionalism in journalism, encouraging members to remain apolitical as they fulfil their duty of informing the public.

He also expressed his commitment to ensuring that the picnic and other initiatives set up under his administration continue beyond his tenure.

“Whether I remain the Chairman or not, this event will go on. I hope the projects we’ve established here at the Edo NUJ are sustained for future generations,” he stated.

He commended the journalists for their professional reportage of the recently conducted Edo 2024 guber election as no litigation was brought against any of them.

The picnic also served as an opportunity to look ahead to the Council’s upcoming triennial delegate conference.

Dr. Alenkhe urged all parties involved to approach the event with a spirit of unity, describing it as a “family affair” that should be conducted in peace and love.

Representing the National Trustee Zone of NUJ, F. Dr. Abimbola Oyetunde conveyed a message from the NUJ President, Dr. Chris Isiguzo, who praised the Edo State Council’s leadership for fostering unity among journalists.

The event featured a variety of recreational activities, including games, swimming, and friendly competitions, and providing journalists with a well-deserved opportunity to relax and bond with colleagues from different parts of the State.

As the Edo NUJ continues to grow, this year’s picnic underscored the organization’s on-going commitment to strengthening ties among media professionals while ensuring the sustainability of key initiatives in the years to come.
