The political landscape in Edo State shifted on Thursday as the Edo State Woman Leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. (Princess) Benedicta Attoh, formally resigned from the party, blaming persistent court battles and internal crises for her decision.
Attoh, who also serves as Executive Chairman of Etsako East Local Government Council, announced her resignation in a letter dated 12th February 2026 and addressed to Mr Jackson Erua, PDP Ward 10 Chairman in Okpekpe. Her decision takes immediate effect.
In the letter, she described her years on the PDP platform as a privilege, noting that it had been “a great honour” to serve both as Executive Chairman of Etsako East and as State Woman Leader of the party.
“I am deeply appreciative of the confidence reposed in me, and for the opportunity to contribute to the growth of our party and community,” she wrote.
However, she pointed to what she described as “endless court summons and internal distractions” within the party, saying these developments had made it increasingly difficult for her to continue identifying with the PDP.
“My personal values, aspirations, and current engagements require a different path,” Attoh stated, adding that after “careful thought, reflection and wide consultation”, she had decided to discontinue her membership and withdraw from all party activities.
Her resignation comes against the backdrop of a recent High Court judgment in Benin concerning her tenure as Executive Chairman of Etsako East Local Government Council. While expressing gratitude for the clarity provided by the ruling, Attoh said the moment offered an opportunity to redirect her focus towards fulfilling her responsibilities to the people of Etsako East, Edo State and the nation.
Copies of the resignation letter were sent to the Chairman of PDP in Etsako East Local Government Area and the Chairman of the party in Edo State.
Attoh’s exit represents a significant development within the Edo PDP hierarchy, given her dual role as a senior party figure and a serving council chairman. Political observers say her departure may deepen existing tensions within the state chapter of the party, already grappling with internal disputes and litigation.
As of press time, the Edo State PDP leadership had yet to issue an official response to her resignation.
