…seeks media collaboration to tackle insecurity

The newly appointed Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, has lauded Governor Monday Okpebholo for the decisive and diplomatic steps taken to de-escalate tensions and restore peace following the recent Uromi massacre.
CP Agbonika gave the commendation during a familiarisation visit to the Press Centre of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Benin City on Thursday, where he also called on the media to partner with the police in addressing criminal activities across the State.
Reflecting on the Uromi crisis, which had threatened to inflame intercommunal tensions, the Commissioner praised Governor Okpebholo’s proactive engagement strategy. “The Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Monday Okpebholo, has done a lot on the Uromi case alone. When I first assumed duty, we travelled to Uromi together. Prior to that, he went as far as Kano State to consult with leaders there, appealing to them to talk to their people in Edo State to maintain peace,” Agbonika said.
The Commissioner revealed that following the governor’s diplomatic outreach, the Deputy Governor of Kano State visited Edo on behalf of his government. “We went to Uromi and met with all stakeholders, including the Hausa and Esan communities. That single visit and the governor’s actions have significantly helped to calm tensions and set the record straight,” he said.
Agbonika further disclosed that he has extended similar peace-building efforts to neighbouring communities with large northern populations, visiting areas such as Igara and Auchi to foster dialogue and promote coexistence. “What has happened has happened. But we must continue to live in peace. I have received firm assurances from community leaders that they will maintain the peace,” he added.
Calling for an “all-of-society” approach to combating crime, the Commissioner outlined his plans to reduce incidents of kidnapping, cultism, armed robbery, and sexual and gender-based violence in the State. “The mandate I’ve given my officers is clear: in the next three months, Edo State must feel different. We want to reduce crime significantly, ensure people feel safe, and guarantee that rights are protected,” he stated.
Agbonika stressed the importance of public cooperation in achieving these goals, pledging transparency and accountability from the police force. “We’re open to criticism. If any of our officers fall short of expectations or engage in extortion, report them. We’re here to serve, not exploit.”
He also announced an intensified crackdown on criminal elements, noting that all police personnel would be actively deployed to patrol and engage with communities. “We’re taking the fight to criminal hideouts across the State, but we need your trust and support,” he said.
On the role of the media, CP Agbonika urged journalists to serve as partners in promoting public safety. “You are key in holding us accountable. If there are areas where we are failing, let us know. The media must help build public trust in the police.”
Responding on behalf of the NUJ, Edo State Council Chairman, Dr Festus Alenkhe pledged the continued support of journalists in the State. “We appreciate your commitment and want to assure you of our cooperation in helping to reduce crime in Edo,” he said.
Dr Alenkhe, however, appealed for improved communication between the police and the media, particularly regarding crime updates. “In light of the current policy against parading suspects, we still urge the police to provide regular updates on arrests, weapons recovered, and other achievements. Monthly briefings would go a long way in informing the public and changing the perception that the police are inactive.”
He concluded by wishing the Commissioner success in his tenure, expressing confidence in his ability to foster peace and security. “Edo is a peaceful and welcoming State, and we believe your leadership will make it even safer.”
