The Edo State Police Command has taken swift disciplinary action against officers filmed vandalising a parked car during a rescue operation in Benin, reaffirming its zero tolerance for unprofessional conduct within its ranks.
The incident occurred on 20 May 2025, following a violent confrontation at Okhuimwun Community, where members of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) were attacked by protesting youths while en route from Lagos. The officers sustained severe injuries and their vehicle was left heavily damaged.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, a reinforcement team was dispatched to the scene, successfully rescuing the injured officers and arresting several suspects believed to be involved in the ambush.
However, during the operation, a number of police personnel from the Command’s Quick Response Team were captured on video engaging in acts of vandalism against a civilian vehicle parked nearby.
While the command strongly condemned the mob attack on the IRT officers, it equally denounced the unprofessional behaviour exhibited by its own personnel. Those involved have since been identified, arrested, and placed under internal disciplinary procedures in accordance with police regulations.
Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, stressed the importance of mutual accountability between law enforcement and the public. He assured residents of Edo State that the Command remains committed to upholding the highest standards of policing and will not tolerate misconduct from any officer.
“We are committed to enforcing the law without fear or favour,” CP Agbonika said. “No one is above the rules—whether civilian or officer.”,
